Miao Festive Dress - Taijiang Style

The dress of Miao people in Huangping county has its distinctive features in the skill of dyeing and sewing.

Formerly, the material of women's tradidional festive dress was cotton cloth locally woven and dyed. Because of the growth of sericulture in this area, cotton cloth was gradually replaced by silk cloth as dress material. Nowadays women like to buy figured satin to make dresses. By repeated dyeing and beating the material is made into a brown, shiny cloth with a unique feature. In Huangping county every household is engaged in processing shiny cloth. As the saying goes, "Passing by a stockaded Miao village, you will hear the noise of beating cloth everwhere."

In Huangping, the ornamental designs of women's festive dress are mainly embroidered on its back. Skirts are all trimmed with rose coloured trimming borders. The trimming borders are made up of several layers with distinctly woven or embroidered patterns. The double-layered trimming borders is of the highest grade.

The outer layer bought figured damask, originally dyed green but now acquiring a metallic bronze hue. The decoration is made up of narrow applied strips of embroidery as well as woven pieces, with weft-faced patterned pieces joined at the selvedges.

The detail reveals the intricacy of the stitchwork. The back of the jacket has the greater area of embroidery and relies on a llimited range of strong colors to create a harmonious effect.
